When I get picturs sent to me as a JPEG, after saving it on my desktop, I try to open it in Photoshop and I get an error saying "Could not open "C://whatevever.jpg" because an unknown or invalid JPEG marker type is found" Does anyone know how to fix this.

Have the people emailing you the JPGs either ZIP them with WinZip, or compress them into SIT with Stuffit. Then have them email them again. This is a common scenario with large image files sent via email.

ok thanks, they have not zipped them. I can open them at my work computer though so i know they are not corrupt. I heard reverting back to PS6 is better for this.

PS is picky about jpegs. I used to keep Corel Photo Paint around for things PS wouldn’t open because it didn’t seem to be as fussy. I’m sure other software will do the trick as well.

Kim,

The image IS corrupt, but other applications may not worry about that. If you open them in another application (even MSPaint!) and re-save them, they should open OK in Photoshop.

Kim,

The file is incomplete or corrupt. I wish Photoshop would give the option to open damaged files anyway. The reason it doesn’t open it is to prevent you from working on a corrupt file and risk loosing data.

You should be able to open the file in a basic viewer and resave the file to a lossless format (just don’t save it back to JPG or it will compress it again).

Thank you, except I have tried opening it in Film Factory and other applications and it will not open. It is a Tiff file and came directly from my Nikon D-100. Do you think I could burn it to cd and take and have it printed and edit it that way??

Wanda,

Are you sure there isn’t a problem with the memory in your camera or the camera itself. Are you opening from the camera or copying the files to the hard drive first? Will it open in a viewer like ACDSee <http://www.acdsystems.com> or Infranview <http://www.irfanview.com/>?

I downloaded directly from the hard drive and all the other tiffs opened in Adobe 7 browser except that one. It seemed to lock up Adobe. Anyway the problem is solved I opened it in Adobe 6 and saved as a jpeg and now can open in 7. I thank you all for your help I would never have been able to figure this out without you.

Wanda – Adobe is a type of brick, or a corporation.

Photoshop is the name of the product.
