I’ve been running PS7 on Win2k for over 6 months now and all has been fine. I just got a new computer which is running XP Pro. I migrated PS7 over to the new computer, and everything seemed ok at first but now all-of-a-sudden when I launch PS it literally takes 3-4 minutes to load the application, and for the most part it looks like it’s hung. I checked my task manager, and I’m not maxed on processor(2.4GHz) or memory(512MB), so I’m not sure what the problem could be. Once it’s loaded it works fine, but it’s PAINFUL to wait for. Anyone else see this and possibly have an answer?

Thanks!

– Josh

Mine takes long too, I dont know if id say 3-4 min for me, but it is pretty long. i dont have many plugins or anything that would slow down the load, and also i have only had WinXP Pro, so i have no other os to compare it to.

There’s been a problem reported with XP SP1 whereby they changed the memory management algorithm and seriously affected programs that work with large amounts of memory. This may be the source of your problem in which case check the MS support site for an update. Otherwise, check the usual suspects – disk fragmentation, swap space size. Bring up the windows task manager before you start up photoshop and look at the memory behaviour. Also, reset you preferences too.

If you have Norton SystemWorks on there – disable recycle bin protection.

If you have thousands of fonts – get rid of most of them.

Make sure your default printer is available, and if it’s on a Netware server choose a local printer as default instead (even if it’s a fake).

Wow, that did it. It was the network printer, that’s connected throught a Samba server. I hooked up a local inkjet, set it to default, and now it starts immediately. How stupid is that? 🙂 Thanks for your help Chris!!!!

John — not stupid, it happens to a lot of people.

There are also some known bugs in Netware that have even longer delays (sometimes depending on the system langauge settings).

And you’re welcome.
