I have been an ardent Fireworks user since version 3.

I am now looking at the utilization of PS7 for comping out my sites, but I find the process of comping difficult in Photoshop.

Are there any internet resources that discuss the process in detail? I am in the decision making process of determining whether to upgrade to DWMX/FWMX or to jump over to GL6/PS7/IR7 for developing websites.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

We’d need to know more about what you find troublesome with Photoshop before being able to offer any help.

I agree with Robert. Is "comping out" compositing?

Sorry for the ambiguity…

There are certain aspects of Fireworks I have found very intuitive regarding the comping of a layout within the application and then exporting out to Dreamweaver. One of the things I find difficult to do (and this could just be that I have used Fireworks for so long) is if I click on a slice and want to export out that one slice – I can’t. In Fireworks – I can right click on a slice and export out that one slice – very few steps and very intuitive.

Also – I find the process of exporting out a sliced page comp rather kludgy in comparison to Fireworks. This isn’t a Photoshop bashing post – I am voicing my issues and would like to see what part of the equation I am missing.

It may very well be that Photoshop will be relegated to only opening EPS files and high rez images only on my machine which I think is a waste for such a powerful application… :-/

Comping a page is doing a page layout mock up in a graphics application and then exporting it out to a web page application like GoLive or Dreamweaver.

Cliff

Like you, I use FW a lot. The things it does, it does much better than ImageReady (my opinion). However, Photoshop does so much more that I cannot concieve of a workflow that does not include PS.

My suggestion would be to ignore ImageReady (even though it is free) and develop a workflow that uses PS and FW.

I think you make a valid point – I find my productivity is quite efficient using Fireworks – I was just trying to eliminate duplication in the process as well as standardizing on Adobe applications in my tool kit, but in reality, I truly think that Fireworks can’t be touched at this time for serious web graphics production – thanks for the input.
