Chris Cox says XP is fixed. I have lots of crashes and other irritations when I run Photoshop 7 on Win SE and am thinking about upgrading to Win XP. I sure don’t want to make things worse and lose data though. Is this a safe and simple upgrade? Thanks jc

Don’t upgrade. Back up all your data and do a clean install and you’ll be fine.

Just make sure all of your hardware is compatible and have all the drivers available. WinXP installation is a piece of cake.

Whatever you do, do NOT do an upgrade install over 98.

Wow Chris, you seem to have a lot of spare time on your hands. Must be all done with the new version of PS.

Soon you can start working on 8.0.1. <VBG>

LeDeane,

Chris is right, if at all possible do a reformat & clean install with a new set of drivers on hand. If it isn’t possible, for what ever reason, it can be done (I did with XP-Home) but you will have to be doing registery editing to get things running smoothly. This is NOT a task for someone who hasn’t done it several times before and had their efforts ALWAYS work properly. Even then, be prepared to junk the work and do the clean install you decided to skip. <grin>

A clean install will also not have stray useless files taking up drive space.

LeDeane,

What are your system specs? Do you have another computer you can backup your data to? What all do you use your computer for?

Your system is unstable right now. As everyone has said you are much better off with a clean install even when the system you start with is stable. Your problems seem to be software related but there is always the possibility that you have hardware that is going bad.

Depending on the speed of your system you may want to just buy a new one. Upgrading to XP will cost you around $100 and you will have some down time as you reinstall all your applications and backup data. Not to mention you will still be stuck with the same old system. Depending on processor speed and memory may not do too well with XP anyway. The slowest computer I have run it on is a PIII 800 but I know people that have it installed on computers half that speed.

Just be sure to consider all your options.
