I realize that this in not the correct forum for this post, but with no functional search engine, it is difficult to find information.
When I try to search using Google, Lycos, etc., I get a web page not found message. When I try to access google.com, I receive a message that my software will not allow access and remedies are suggested. They haven’t worked.
I tries Spybot…no success. Tried editing the host file under drivers. When I altered the file and saved, then reopened, the file had returned to its pre-edited form.
I would appreciate any help or direction.

John

Tango45512,

You could always try restoring your registry to an earlier date (Before the problem started) if it started acting up recently. Sometimes the quick and easy approach works.

You should run a virus scanner and do a check for ad-ware if you can though.

Thanks for suggestions Robert, Dave.
I tried restoring to a previous time before I began having problems. I have run a full virus scan with Norton. I also run Norton Personal Firewall and have tried Spybot. I can see in the file Windows\system32\drivers\etc\host the bad instructions. When I delete and save, however, and reopen the file, it has reverted to its previous form.
I will try adaware. I am at my wits end.

Thanks, John

I tried adaware to no avail. It found several objects which I deleted. Edited HOST file still reverts to pre-edited form.

I believe that my problem is corrected. I tried an number of things, edited the register, etc. It seems to work.
Much gratitude to those who helped.

also, when one saves the host file, it is NOT to have an extension on it. If you save it in Notepad, you need to write the filename as "Hosts" complete with the quotation marks and then it will save it without the default .txt extension.

Alternatively, you can save in Notepad, with the .txt extension and then navigate to the file and use the rename feature, removing the extension.

If there is a .txt extension on the hosts file, it will not function.

You got a trojan is my guess. It happened to us, similar symptoms, only NAV found it and gave removal instructions. I’d focus there.
