hi, i am an intermediate ps user and since now i have never been using the qiuck mask option very often, well never i rather say. but this week end i made a tutorial found on the net which made use of quick mask. i activated quick mask and then painted over the area to be modified then disabled quick mask and get the painted area selected. but the tut. also said that quick mask was rather a great tool and had many other applications as well. when making selsction i would rather use the lasso or marquee and then adjust it manually later. could anybody tell me the adavntages of using quick mask as well as the other uses and benefits of this tool.

Cheers

Well, I think just about anything is better than the lasso, but some nice things about QM is that you can toggle between your selection and the mask, you can zoom in on the selection and tweak it at a pixel level easily. You can copy and paste into it or from it. You can run Levels and other Adjustments on it, use gradients with it, and lots of other nifty things.

First, Quick Mask is exactly like making the Alpha Channel active and visible and then working on it. It’s a "quick step" to the same thing.

Next, in QM (or in editing the Alpha Channel), you can paint/erase the mask with all of the painting tools. Your brushes are totally unlimited and by hitting the "x" key, you can toggle between Paint and Erase. You can apply many of the Filters to the mask and create effects that just the Selection Tools can not possibly offer. In short, it takes the Selection Tools into a new dimension, and is the most powerful way to exact total control over your Selections.

You could also use color fading tool for smooth transitions from selected to not-selected.
Doubleclick on the quickmask button to change color and opacity.
