In other applications I use (AutoCAD, VIZ, etc.) there is a mechanism for "cross-referencing" or "reference loading" other files.

A good example from CAD would be that I could be working on a floor plan while someone else is working on the electrical plan, and yet another person is doing HVAC. We could each then "XREF" each others’ files into our own (via network or internet) and see what the others are doing. Their geometry would not exist in my drawing, but I could see it superimposed over mine. This allows us to work independently and simultaneously on the same project. It also allows me to separate lioke portions of large files to make working with each easier.

Now my question…..

Does PS have such a utility? I am working on several projects right now which are 3600×4800 px, and contain 20-40 layers. They routinely get into the hundreds of MB range. A flattened TIF is about 50MB and a medium res JPG is around 1.5MB.

My wish would be that I could separate portions of an image and XREF them together without all the levels. Also, ultimately, each time I load the "parent" file, the *current* versions of all of the "child" files would load. (I know I could open each file and flatten/saveas then open the parent and delete previous versions and paste the new ones in, but for obvious reasons I would rather not.)

Anyway, is this possible? Or something similar? These file sizes are killing me! Sorry about the long post – just trying to explain…

Thanks!!

No. Sorry.

These file sizes are
killing me!

What kind of computer are you using? I routinely work on files in the hundreds of megabytes on an antique Power Mac G3 system without difficulty.
