Yes. Save the InDesign file as a pdf. Open the pdf in Photoshop.

It’s important to understand that an InDesign file *is not a picture.*

InDesign is not an image editor. An InDesign file may contain placed pictures, just like a Word file may contain placed pictures, but an InDesign file is not a picture–just like a Word file is not a picture. I’m a bit baffled why you’d want to read an InDesign file in Photoshop. What is your goal? What do you intend to do with the file?

If you have InDesign, you can create a PDF from the InDesign file and you can open the PDF in Photoshop. However, if your goal is to get a picture contained within the InDesign file into Photoshop, you should first understand that the picture isn’t contained inside the InDesign file–InDesign stores references to pictures, not the pictures themselves. To make the PDF, you will need the InDesign file *and* all the pictures it contains. It’d be far easier just to open those pictures in Photoshop.

The purpose is to read a InDesign file that was given to me by a graphics arts shop. I don’t have InDesign & I don’t want a pdf. Are they any other apps that can read a InDesign file?

thanks in advance

No. You can download a trial of ID from Adobe and open it that way. Or take it to a printer that has ID and have them convert it to a pdf or extract the psd.

Why don’t you want a pdf? Are you going to do any modifications to the file or do you just want to print it out or view it?

So, you need to open, edit, save and use an InDesign file. You need InDesign.

You could have them export it as XML or RTF.
Otherwise you are outta luck.
You can edit PDF, you know.

So export as PDF and edit in Illustrator.
