Photoshop 4 and XP

When I start Photoshop 4 on the Windows XP that was installed as an upgrade to Win98SE I get an error msg saying that Photoshop cannot find INTELREG.dll file. I close the error msg window and Photoshop goes ahead and loads and seems to run fine. I run the same Photoshop 4 on my laptop that came with Windows XP installed, not as an upgrade, and get no such error msg. Anyone else ever seen this? Have tried all the standard solutions, erasing photoshop from hard drive and reinstalling, etc.

I wonder if it possible some virus has infected my Photoshop.exe file and the intelreg.dll is something it wants or uses?

Sure I could upgrade my Photoshop, but 4 does everything I need. No need to spend megabucks for upgrades.

2 things:

1) Applying XP as an upgrade on top of 98 seems to cause no end of problems [not just with PS]. It is really better to install XP from scratch.

2) I think it is optimistic to expect such old software to be problem-free on the latest OS.

I suggest you upgrade. PS7 is light-years ahead of PS4 and it works very well under XP.

Photoshop 8 should be out soon.

You made two mistakes. The biggest one by far is upgrading your operating system. The second one is expecting software as old as PS 4.0 to run on XP.

So here’s my advice. Back up your data and reinstall XP clean. Then wait til tomorrow’s announcement about the next version of Photoshop and purchase the 7.0 upgrade. If the past is any indication of the future, you’ll then be eligible for a free upgrade to the next version which will be called Photoshop 8.0 or Photoshop CS depending upon the rumor you read.

I have Photoshop 4.0.1 on XP with 2 monitors (matrox550 card, 1g ram, 2.6 p4)

My question is I can move the photoshop window and working picture onto screen 2 but none of the pallets. (Painter 5.5 has similar prob) The only advice I can get is that if its a MS DOS prog then it cannot utilise the two screens.

Because PS4 is a Win 95 program and the fact half of it does display over two screens I’m trying to confirm that this is a problem only corrected by an upgrade to XP compatable software?

please tell me there is a patch or something!
Cheers, Ed.

Photoshop 4 works *just fine* on a clean install of XP.

Ver 7/CS is a MAJOR update.

I can’t believe that something as old as PS 4 works on XP….

(although Photoshop 1, 2, 2.5, 3, 4, 5, 5.5, 6, 7 still work on Mac OS X)

chris, many people have reported (the latest as recently just a week or 2 ago) running 4 on xp fine with the .01 patch. You guys should make it available again in the download area. What is it, like a 2 meg download? As it is, some kind soul has to dig it up and email it, or host it (mike, most recently) in order to help someone get their system running.

just a thought, dave
