Hi all,

Here’s something I’ve come across. I have CorelDraw11 (have to use it for work) and it comes with a bunch of photos and clip art. Most of the photos are .jp2 files. They open in Corel, but Photoshop can’t seem to open them. So my question is, what type of files are these and has anyone had contact with them before? Thanks.

JP2 files are JPEG 2000. The file format was only recently formally adopted (even though it has 2000 in its name). Photoshop doesn’t support it yet. Do a search of this forum for some helpful tips.

Looks like it’s US$49.00 <http://www.pegasusimaging.com/imagepressj2k.htm>.

It’s the Software Development Tools that cost US$4999 and up.

Ninja,

LuraTech has a 30-day free demo of their Photoshop plug-in for JPEG-2000. Compare how much better JPEG-2000 is as compared with JPEG at:

<http://www.luratech.com/>

The LuraTech Photoshop plug-in trial is good for 30 days, which lets you get a much better introduction than ImagePress’s 5 Saves limitation. If you decide to buy the LuraTech version, it is $81.72. However it is very likely that the new Photoshop 8 will include JPEG-2000 support as a standard feature, so if you are planning to upgrade you might want to put your JPEG-2000 money toward the cost of the Photoshop upgrade. But verify that Photoshop 8 does indeed support JPEG-2000 first.

For more information on the LuraTech plug-in for Photoshop, see:

Corel has some known problems in their JPEG 2000 implementation (their files aren’t readable by the reference implementation). They’re working on fixing it.
