Will it be possible to attach an upgrade version of PS 8 to ps 5.5 education version or will I need to buy the new version in its entirity?

No promises, but if past experience is followed you will. Check back after the announcement is made, when upgrade policies for this version will be spelled out.

I just checked the announcement at the Adobe site and education versions were not excluded for the update so give it a try. It should be OK. Photoshop elements and Photoshop deluxe are not upgradeable.
