Newbie question:

Whenever I select type tool adobe makes a new layer for me. Is there a way I can set it so that I can still write within the same layer? example: layer1 = picture of dog
select type tool on the same layer thus writing "hi spot" on layer1 as well.

Also, is there a way to merge just two layers?

thanks all.

Yes. Use the Type Mask tool. Click on the broken outline T on the Options Bar. Type won’t be editable though.

Yes. Link the layers and choose Merge Linked from the flyout arrow or turn off visibility on the other layers and choose Merge Visible.

Take a look through your manual and you’ll find lots of things like this.

I havent used the type mask tool. I usualy just keep my text on separate layers then merge them to the layer that i want it on when i have it just the way that i want it. but as the other poster said…once you merge your layers then your text becomes rasterized and will not be editable. It is a minor but livable nuicance.

and rather than clicking on all the eye icons etc….i simply move the layer two layers that i want to merge so that that one is on top of the other…then i choose "merge down" from the layer menu.

hope that helps.

Alex,
If you select the top layer of the two you want to merge then press ctrl+E this will merge it with the layer below.
