I believe this feature did not make it to the FINAL product.

Can I told about this feature ?, from those who beta tested it ??. Is it good as it sounds ?, i.e. Filters that are layerable..for all filters..blur,sharpen,extrude..etc.. ???.

hot denim. If such thing ever existed, the ones that tested it are still on NDA about it. what ticles me is that there was never any screenshot of it, nor of a menu indicating that name. for me, it is misunderstanding of layer comps, or photo filters…

hot_denim,

If it was a feature it morphed into the Filter Gallery. If it never existed at all, the Filter Gallery is the feature that matches the feature request many asked for (including myself). I think the Filter Layers would be a resource nightmare on 300 dpi CMYK images and for this reason they were left off. The Filter Gallery is sort of a happy medium where you can stack filters and see how they look in real-time before committing to anything. I like this approach and I think this will be a good solution once enough people give it a try. I know I’m looking forward to using it.

I, for one, was really looking forward to the filter layers. Sorry it didn’t make the cut.

Stuart, you mention the Filter Gallery several times in your post. Is it one of the new features? I didn’t see anything about it while I was looking over the new info that’s online.

HangtownGal,

Check out the videos at this link <http://www.photoshopuser.com/photoshopcs.html>. The Filter Gallery video is the second one but there are many others with information about the various new features of PS CS.

From what I understand, beta testers can comment on what the final version will be capable of – however they *cannot* discuss anything about what was in earlier beta versions and what was not – or about any bugs etc which were discussed in the privacy of the beta testers private forums.

In lieu of individual filter layers, I like the compromise but I suspect that once one or multiple filters are applied, the individual filter attributes would be lost and no longer editable. I’m guessing the only option for filter adjustment would then be the Fade Filter option, acting upon the combined filter effect.

Sure enough Dave, being able to heal to a transparent layer does look pretty sweet. I’ve recently been working on my first serious retouching job on an old photo my mother asked if I could restore. Being able to separate out those healing edits from the original and further touch up the edits to improve how well they blend in will be wonderful to have.

I dont like this compromise one BIT. This is absolutely nothing like live filter layers – look at AE sometime.

You cant mix color adjustments with filters? What about blur filters – going by the QT movie on NAPP’s site – there isnt a lot of filters/adjustments that *I* would regularly use together.

This is better than no filter gallery, but it is certainly no substitute for live filters.

Is there an application that has Live Filter Layers (as it sounds) that I can see ?…How good an implementation of filter layers is it.

Jason,

Remember that Photoshop needs to work efficiently on 300 dpi CMYK images and filter layers would slow the system to a crawl. You can’t expect users to simply not use the feature if they are working on these files. You add to this 16-bit 300 dpi CMYK images and the computational power required is astronomical. Every time you move or retype text you need to recalculate each tile that the affected pixels reside in. When you work with photographs you could easily be working on 600 dp and larger resolution files. The math adds up quickly. Would I like to have live effects? Sure. I even requested this feature a long time ago, after the first time I used AE. However, I realize that the systems we have to day are not sfficient enough to make this feasible given the wide array of file parameters Adobe has to account for.

…so AE has filter layers..as it ‘sounds’…blur/sharpen/extrude etc.. all on the fly ?… as good as it sounds ?….

yes real time Filter layers sounds Power hungry……..so what do you think, another 3 versions before the power exists to even think about pulling it off ? in Photoshop ?….

Healing to blank layers
———————–

So…why did this option not allready exists ?..I take it clone tool has always done this ?.. why did it not alredy exists ?..it does not require too much programming does it etc….I thought it would be there by default first time… ???..

Also…why does the PATCH brush , not healing brush cannot heal to a blank layer ?? (or vica versa).. I saw a video demo via one of the posts on a site that was demonstaration the new features…and it showed (as I see it) that the BRUSH could , but PATCH tool could not. ??? , why ?not? ?

Stuart – and yet there is a tutorial (or at least there was) on Adobe’s own site using After Effects for print work showing how to have live effects.

I’m not saying live filters doesnt have the possibility of killing most cpu’s out there, but I can think of about a dozen things that has existed since pre-version 5 that will too.

Yes. Deneba Canvas has had them for four versions now.

Actually after looking at the new feature in Photoshop CS I have to say it is kind of cool and will be useful. Only complaint I have is I wish you had opacity and blending mode control over them while your stacking them. I can’t believe they missed that one.

Even if you were not able to stack them, Opacity and blending mode would make sense be on the filter menu (I posted a Feature Request about it)… next time, maybe… but I’m already awaiting to work on CS!

I’m not knocking the new feature, just dont confuse it with filter layers.

Since you can stack them inside the new feature one would have thought having opacity and blending mode options for each one would have been a given. As it is now you can easily stack a couple of effects and get something nice and then choose a new one that completely covers the others and not be able to blend them together.

You could make a copy of the image and apply the effects separately to regular layers to do the opacity and blending, but it would have been nice to have this in feature itself.

It would have also been nice if you can tell the feature to apply each effect to a separate copy of the image on a separate layer. So when you applied them and you had say 5 effects you would have five layers each with a copy of the image with one of the 5 effects applied. This would have allowed you to edit and tweak each one even further. More creative control.

Well, as you said maybe next time. I still think that while it is real live layer filters it is going to be an interesting and useful feature.

Jason,

True it isn’t. But from the rumor stand point I can see it could be misunderstood as such. They probably didn’t have much information let alone clear information on the rumored features and they did what they could with what they had.
