I’m having trouble with my quick mask on Photoshop 7. Im running XP. The problem I’m having is that when I click Q then use my brush to color in the part I want to quick mask then click back to regular mode it selects the whole page, not just the part I painted in. What do I need to do to fix this problem? Thanks.

Opacity is at 100%.

Changing the opacity doesn’t do a thing. It still selects the whole picture, not the part that I filled in.

Is it selecting the *whole* page, or maybe everything *but* what you painted? Double-click a quickmask button in the tool bar to check if you have your preferred option checked: color indicates masked or selected areas.

It is selecting the whole page. I have masked area selected on my preferences. The opacity is set at 50%.

The only time I’ve seen QM select the entire image is when you have marching ants around the image. Double click on the QM icon in the toolbar. Does it say it is displaying Selected or Masked areas?

Sandi, see if resetting your preferences will help. When you start PS up, hold down the Ctrl, Shift, Alt keys together. When the window comes up say yes to trash the old preferences. Don’t know if it will help or not but worth a try.

In QM mode, the painted area is the unselected area, so it selects the rest of area/whole canvas. Use control+hift +I invert the selection to get the the area that you wanted. I use this a lot to cut out the figure or cars from my digital photos. Hope this would help !

Sandi,

Are you on an alpha channel? Or is it the normal RGB – look in the channels palette.

Before you "click back" from Quick Mask, look in your channels palette. Is there an alpha channel shown, and does it reflect the editing you’ve done with the QM tool?

The only thing shown in the channels is RGB, Red, Green, Blue and Quick Mask.

I’m stumped.
At which point I would try deleting prefs.

I forgot to say that I have the paintbrush set to Normal mode, Opacity 100% and Flow 100%. I am using CS2 Ver 9.

What colour do you have for your brush?

Make sure its R0 G0 B0

That was exactly the problem. I put those settings in and now it’s working fine. Thanks a lot for your help.
