Hi friends,

When working on a layer that is bigger than the current canvas size, I would like to know how to delete outside of the current marquee selection, including the parts of the current layer that extend beyond the boundaries of the canvas.

To give an example, say I have a layer whose content is bigger than the current canvas size. Say the canvas size is 400 x 400 and the layer I’m working on is an image sized 600 x 600.

If I select a square selection of say 100 x 100, I would like to delete outside of the selection. Obviously, if I INVERT the selection and press the delete key, all the content of the layer is removed UP UNTIL the edges of the canvas. However, the remaining content of the layer still remains if I move the layer around the canvas.

I guess I want to remove EVERYTHING on the current layer OUTSIDE the current selection, even parts of the current layer that extend outside the canvas. Some kind of advanced crop that is limited to the current layer without cropping the canvas.

Hope I’ve explained this ok?! Sorry if its a little long winded 🙂

Thanks as always,

Mr Impossible.

Don’t know if this will work for you but select all (Ctrl A) on the layer you want to trim and use Image>Trim. This will trim the layer up to the edges of the canvas.

Thanks Tam, that does work. However, is there a specific command to do this without having to do a selection of the canvas, cropping, then doing the selection and delete?

Why don’t you just select what’s inside the marquee, make a new layer out of it and then delete the original layer ??
Or have I misunderstood the question ??

I know I know! I just though there may be a one click command or shortcut key to do the whole thing in one swoop.

Thanks.
