First off, I have to say that I’m a first time poster and actually this is my first night here. This is a great newsgroup and everyone here is real helpful! I bought Photoshop 7 a few months ago and WOW, what an amazing program.

Anyway, I’m in a band and currently in the process of creating a new logo. I’m looking for some flames to add into the background. It’s not essential that they look like a photo taken of a flame, but something like an airbrushed look (maybe like airbrushed flames on a Harley or on a tattoo) would be fine. I found a couple different ways of doing this freehand (including using the blur tool) while browsing the internet, and I also found some plugins. I was just wondering if anyone here could recommend a plugin to use, or if I should just stick to freehand?

Thanks,
Matt

Create the flames yourself, most PhotoShop plugins are just quick solutions to effects that can be created using the basic program. Also your speed of learning the program and personal satisfaction will be greater creating the flames yourself.

I do not know what do you mean by "Quick solutions". If it can be created by "basic program" in 10 steps, what’s wrong if there is a plug-ins can do that in 1 step?

Matt,
I created the following flames in KPT 3 Gradient Designer in the "Greyscale Mapburst" mode. The selected color clustered to the shape of the clouds in the background according to tone and I just duplicated, rotated, erased non-flame shapes and adjusted transparency to my taste. The random shapes of the clouds provided an excellent pattern for the chaotic nature of flames.

And regarding an earlier contention that "Create the flames yourself, most PhotoShop plugins are just quick solutions to effects that can be created using the basic program," it’s not the case with most KPT products. Here are a few more samples from KPT 3 Gradient Designer that just can’t be created in any other way:
