To find out what filters/tools were used on an image *AFTER* it’s been saved? The reason I ask is I have an image that I’ve worked on and I’d like to recreate the effect, but I cannot for the life of me remember what I did! The History’s no use as it, obviously, only records changes made in that session.

Is there any way of discovering the techniques used on an image? The embarrassing thing is, I only did it this afternoon!

Using CS if it matters…

Thanks

If the file is saved as a Photoshop file (PSD extension), then this info will show up. If saved as a JPEG, the info is lost.

erm .. NO it doesn’t – History – i.e. how you have _manipulated_ an image isn’t saved in the PSD file – how could it be???
😐

I’d like to know that too – some of my best work comes about by accident.

Exactly where does the info shoe up?

Clarification – when you use any layer effects, these will remain on the layers pallet, showing what was done. AFM – thanks for bringing that to my attention.

As noted, once you exit from a file, the history is lost. But a PSD file will show what layer effects were used.

For future reference,
if you hadn’t closed the file, yes…
CS allows you to see and export
the history in text form.

but, for this file….no.

Excuse me for butting in… But Photoshop CS, has a history log feature. On the first page of your preferences, there is a check box and choice for it at the bottom. If the History Log box is checked, there should be either a text file on you hard drive somewhere, metadata in your file, or both. If it’s a text file, the path for it should be in your preference on the first page. To access the metadate: open your file, then goto the File menu and choose "File Info." A box will pop up and the histoy choice should be in the left hand side.
