Hey!

I have had adobe photoshop for years and recently upgraded to the modern version 7. I have been trying to create an effect and cant find a way to do it and wondered if anyone could help. I am looking to take a portrait and make it look hand drawn with a pencil by means of plugin or technique. I am willing to look at purchasing new plugins.

Thanks For Any Help!

James

Try importing into Adobe Streamline or Macromedia Freehand (it has a better trace tool than Illustrator, feel free to throw things at me) and using the trace tools to create vectors and adjust the type of stroke. Thats what I would do, but I’m a vector whore.

or try a search here on the forums, or out on the Web for photo to pencil tutorial.

A start-
Dup background > desaturate > dup again > invert > set layer blend to dodge (your canvass should now appear white) > gaussian blur the inverted layer.
Now you can play around with levels. Or dup layer 2 and use find edges or glowing edges inverted filters > move to top and use blending modes/opacity or advanced blending in styles and knockout white or etc. etc.

Update to version 7.0.1. It’s a freebee at the top of the forums here.

Make sure your image is RGB mode then look at your filter selections under ‘Artistic’ and ‘Sketch.’

Look there first.

Based on my experiences with so-called photo-art generated by native PS filters and/or 3rd party plug-ins, you’ll never be able to achieve realistic looking pencil strokes without manually creating them using programs like Right Hemisphere’s Deep Paint, Corel Painter or the like.

There are a lot of so-called "pencil sketch" actions and methods using various filters and masking techniques about, but none really generate results even close to the real thing.

That said, a very good (and free) action called "Insta-sketch" (beta version) was posted recently by Mike Finn at his site:

The results are sketch-like, but not true pencil-sketch in quality.

Cheers…

Have you tried filter-stylize-find edges? I sometimes start with that.
