I just bought the upgrade Photoshop CS from an Adobe sales rep over the phone. I qualified because I bought version 3 quite some time ago and my registration info was still in their system.

The website states: To install upgrade successfully, you will need a licensed version of Photoshop 7.0 or earlier on the same platform as this purchase. Great, sounds good.

Well guess what the Install process states you need to have Version 5 or later on the system or have the disc inserted in your drive. WHAT GOES! I can’t install it because I have version 3. This is Bogus.

I welcome any thoughts.

I installed using Version 3 as a base. You have to call Adobe at their number for the country you are in. They will ask you for your Version 3 serial number, and take you through the installation process, which involves a couple of additional steps. The whole thing took a bit longer for me because 1) they had trouble finding my version 3 registration on file and 2) the telephone tech was under the mistaken impression that one needed to have Version 5 or later to upgrade. Both of these problems were sorted out, and 15 minutes later CS was installed.

Thanks Mark, Paul…worked like a charm.

Quick note: The customer service rep stated that the website may change shortly and require Photoshop 5+ and Illustrator 7+ to upgrade. Those who have earlier versions should consider the upgrade now since the Adobe website offers any version as upgradeable. Just remember with old versions, you will have to go through customer service to unlock the software.

Cheers.

I cannot fathom the concept of upgrading from 3 to 8? LOL I got in at 4.0 and it seems like days before man was able to fly. I
trust you have worked in more current versions? 🙂

That rep was incorrect. The upgrade to Photoshop CS will always be from any previous version of Photoshop. For upgrading from versions earlier than Photoshop 4.0 you will need to contact Adobe Customer Service to install the upgrade. For upgrading to Photoshop CS from any version of Photoshop version 4.0 and later, the Photoshop CS upgrade installer can verify the older version by itself.

Upgrade is just a license issue. When they say you need version xxx, they just want to know that you paid for that.
