moving image into other image question

I’m trying to drag 2- 4×6" images (300dpi) into 1-8×12" (300dpi). Trouble is when I drag them in they appear much larger than 4×6, making me have to transform them to correct size. Yes, I’m working at 100% size on both source and destination images. Seems like it shouldn’t be this hard to accomplish. Am I missing something?

Rather than "dpi", avoid misunderstanding by looking at the actual pixel dimensions. See Image -> Image Size. Does that help?

I’ve tried this and I get a small size shift too. (I had forgotten why I rarely drag between ps docs;) I think somehow it may be trimming some portion off by where it’s dropped. You should get perfect result from copy/paste though.

I just experimented and found that if I drag them to an oversized document, then align them and trim the document, I get perfect results; but copy/paste is much easier.

Are you SURE that every image is the same resolution? If one image is 300 pixels per inch and one is 200 pixels per inch, the sizes won’t match when you drag one into the other.

I’m wondering if, in my case, it might have been a memory thing. Today I’ve gotten both results at different times. This is with the simplest of tests, make two docs, 200px X 200px, 72dpi, fill one with one color, the other with another color, then make a new doc 200px X 400px and drag the other 2 into it. Simple. But sometimes it worked, and sometimes not. I think in my case it might be a memory thing.. how many apps I happen to have open and my Macs been on without restart?…

BTW, I’m still in PS6.0.1. It’s my habit to copy/paste anyway, since I’m usually copying merged. But this does seem odd behavior. I do have memory issues frequently though… and so does my Mac;)

Don’t know what it is… dpi changes to other than 300 after I drag it in or copy/paste. I’ll keep trying your suggestions though,. thanks.

That means the image you are dragging it into or copy/pasting it into isn’t 300 pixels per inch.

If the source and destination are the same resolution, then the image will go across at the same physical size. If the source and destination are not the same resolution, then it won’t. Pretty simple, really.
