Using Photoshop 7 I’d like to use a mono-colored object and have it throwa
colored gradient dropshadow. Have tried to knockout the drop shadowthrough
to a gradient layer without success. Any suggestions?

It may be that the original poster doesn’t know how to liberate the drop shadow from the object. Right-click (or Control-click on Mac) on the "f" symbol in the Layers Palette and choose Create Layer. I’d just put the shadow on a layer, lock that layer’s transparency, and draw a gradient.
