Does anyone know where I can find a tutorial on retouching a "double chin". When the photo is shot from the side it’s fairly easy to retouch. However, when the photo is shot straight on or at a slight angle, that’s another matter. The same applies to making overweight subjects look thinner.

Any tips and tricks?

Thanks,

Michael J

I did use my own name (nym?) Is there another Michael J in this group?

Anyway, thank you for the advice. I’ll practice with the Liquify and Smudge tools and see what I come up with.

I hope you don’t represent the majority of people in this group. I simply asked for a little info on a retouch subject. If you don’t have anything nice or informative to say then why say anything at all?

If I have mis-used the newsgroup, please let me know and I will stop doing whatever I did. If I haven’t done anything wrong then I will simply say that, "we’ve gotten off to a poor start". I’ll forget it and we can start again on a better note.

Michael,

Depending on exactly what you want to do, you might use the Brush Tool, set to Lighten for the shadow areas that define the dobule chin, or the Dodge Tool set to Shadow. Eliminating some of the defintion around that area goes a long way toward reducing the "flaw." To remove the unwanted flesh, the Liquify Tool, or, if in profile, maybe use the Clone Tool to remove the area completely.

I suggest that you create a new layer above the image you want to retouch. That way, you can work without changin the orignal. If you use some of the tools like Clone, you will need to check the Use all layers box.

Highlights and shadows create form. If you paint them out, you will flatten the form.

Good luck.

Michael,

Just ignore the unhelpful posts, or learn to killfile people who post for ego gratification rather than to exchange information.

In frontal views, double chins tend to show as lighter or darker than the real chin and the rest of the neck (depending on the lighting). Retouching them usually means matching the tone with that of the neck. Try cloning neck texture up into the double chin, taking special care to eliminate any fold of skin where the double chin meets the neck. You might also try selecting the double chin and darkening it (usually) to match the neck. With top lighting, the darkest area of the neck should be just where the double chin is: at the back of the jawline. Depending on the lighting, you may get the most realistic look by darkening the double chin beyond that of the rest of the neck.

If the angle of the head shows the way the double chin bulges outward, clone background to maintain the curve of the neck.

hope this helps!

Thanks for the help guys. If I come up with anything that’s acceptable to view, I’ll post it on my web site with comments about what I did to remove the double chin. Looks like I have a whole new set of Photoshop skills to learn.

One more thing…

Somewhere I read that when using the dodge and burn tools, you should use a White Brush for one and a Black Brush for the other. Which is it? Or does it even matter?

Also, is it the Burn tool that I want to use to create shadows under the chin or is there a better way to create shadow?

Thanks again,

Somewhere I read that when using the dodge and burn tools, you should use a White Brush for one and a Black Brush for the other. Which is it? Or does it even matter?

The dodge and burn tools don’t have a color. What you heard is a different, and better, technique. Put a new layer above the image layer, and fill it with middle gray. Change the layer’s blend mode to Soft Light. Now when you paint with white, it lightens the image under it, while black darkens the image. Middle gray is transparent in Soft Light mode, not changing the underlying image at all. You can paint with a reduced opacity to make the effect more gradual, or use a light or dark gray.

The technique is better because it’s non-destructive: you can change shadows and highlights if you go too far by painting with the opposite color. Or trash the layer and start again.

Also, is it the Burn tool that I want to use to create shadows under the chin or is there a better way to create shadow?

The Burn tool is hard to control unless you build the effect gradually. You tend to get a blotchy look. The Soft Light layer method mentioned above is better, or you can select the double chin and darken it with Curves or Levels. If you use the latter technique, you’ll probably have to blend the edges with a layer mask.

Newsgroups can be used as each person wishes, I choose to play in newsgroups and some people don’t like that idea. So they get pissy. That is still not my problem. Not my responsibility to help them feel less pissy.

I play with people like Hecate… they are fun "Net Toys". They spin so nicely when I just slightly poke them. They spin around and make silly threats and make silly fools of themselves all the while trying to "teach" me a lesson.

Such fun.

It’s a shame you feel the need to be disruptive, but you’re not the only one. Your behavior is not exclusive to yourself. You’re simply just the next one in line with the same act. And, if it was possible to ban you from these NG’s you would be. I don’t know what it is about newsgroups that attract such people. Personally, I don’t care. Many do though.
Just keep in mind, as entertaining as it is to yourself, it’s very selfish and childlike to behave in such a way. Most, if not all
people with your mindset have very anti-social tendencies, and never see the forest for the trees. Incurable, actually.
No biggie, you go and another will replace you. That’s the way it is with newsgroups, lol. Most regulars know and work around it. I even keep this post in file and copy and paste it to post as needed.
It would however be more fun to read your posts if you did it in your own name. You know, create your own identity!
This is far as I ever go with any comments, have fun!

No one has done that. No one has used your email address.

Actually, you’ve attempted to by one slight alteration. As I’ve said above, please carry on giving me more evidence to get your ISP to can you.

Well I’m glad you, at least, got the joke.

At least I think it’s you.
You tell by checking the headers to the post. AssholeMike is trying to avoid retribution by using "newsguys" instead of newsguy in the hope that it will save him from getting canned by his ISP. Of course, now he’s doing post-editing as well that makes it even more likely that he’ll be off air if I complain.

Tom,

YOU ROCK. Thank you for the explanation and clarification. I’ve been looking all over trying to find that technique again.
