I have a simple problem I can’t imagine doesn’t have a simple solution, but I haven’t been able to find it. If I want to cut and paste a selection from one level to another, Photoshop puts it in the centre of the doc. I want it pasted exactly in the same position as it was cut from, otherwise I have to carefully move it to the exact position and this takes time. There doesn’t seem to be any reason for pasting the selection in a different place than where it came from so why does this happen and is there a simple solution. (There is certainly a complicated multi step solution, but that’s as tedious as moving it).

There are alot of ways you could this. The most simple way I can think of would be this:

1)Duplicate the layer.
2)Make your selection (the area you want duplicated)
3)Select> Inverse your selection (you may not need this step depending on how you made your selection.
4)Delete the unwanted area, thus, leaving the area you want.

If you have to do this many times, creating an automated task for this procedure would be ideal.

There is a slight problem with this solution. If you are using low resolution, the results may be poor. If you are working in high-res, no problem, In both cases, try making your selection with a slight feather radius (.5 to 1.5 should do). This will help in dealing with jaggies.

Photoshop 101 §4.3.5, ¶2:

Make your selection.

CTRL+J copies it to a new layer, in place.
CTRL+Shift+J cuts it out of the original layer and puts it on a new layer, in place.

Phos, what a great trick! I never knew about that one.

Layer via Copy (CTRL+J)
Layer via Cut (CTRL+Shift+J)

Very cool.

Disregard my first post, only a fool would follow that road.
