Hi all,

I am trying to create the pale skin, platinum blonde hair, red lipped, dark eyed look of Gwen Stepahi on some pictures for my daughter and her friends. As you can see, my attempt was pathetic and I totally lost it on the hair.

Any and all suggestions appreciated!!!

you might try a high-key approach. I’m not sure if this is what you are looking for, but have a look at

http://webpages.charter.net/richardandjoy/joy%20-%20white.jp g

and

http://webpages.charter.net/richardandjoy/joy%20-%20white.jp g

One is really soft, and you probably don’t want to soften the image. The other is duotone, but you could just as easily not take the color out. The key (pun) was given to me a week or so ago on one of these newsgroups — use the curves layer to blow out the highlights.

I also uploaded
http://webpages.charter.net/richardandjoy/joy%20high%20key.p sd so you can see how I did it. BTW, I did this in paint shop pro and saved it as *.psd. I guess it will look the same.

Hope this helps,

Richard

Hi,

I love those kind of portraits, but I guess what I am specifically looking for is how to make any color hair blonde and have it look reasonably real, kinda the Jean Harlow, Marilyn Monroe, look that Stepahni is copying.

Thanks!

Select her hair.
Add a Curves adjustment layer.
Lighten the blue channel a little.
Lighten RGB a lot.

I tried that last night during my insomniac hours and it actually worked! However, I wasn’t really pleased with my selection. I tried the magic wand and lasso, then tried extracting it and pasting it back. Extracting worked the best. How would you select the hair?

Thanks!!!

Greetings, fellow insomniac!

Selecting hair is often challenging. In this case, yes, the extract filter is probably your best bet. After you have the hair extracted on a separate layer, you can use Select>Load Selection to create a selection from the transparency of the hair layer. Then you don’t need the hair layer anymore. After you create the adjustment layer, you can edit the layer mask to fine tune any stray wisps or other problems.

Not knowing who Gwen Stefani was, I did a web search and found that her hair comes in quite a variety of colors. Once you have the platinum blonde look done, you can duplicate the adjustment layer, deactivate the blonde adjustment layer, and try some other colors by changing the curves or maybe adding a hue/saturation adjustment.

The pale skin in this photo was done by duplicating a layer, gaussian blurring the bottom layer and selective erasing of the top layer so the eyes, mouth, etc. are sharp, but the skin is soft:

I just did a search and couldn’t even find a picture of her current look in her new video! I was assuming that all fellow insomniacs watched MTV or VH1 at night since those are the only stations around here that don’t have infomercials! 🙂
