When I launch Adobe Photoshop CS I get an error message that it can’t find "SF_OSU.DLL". I’ve checked on Adobe’s web site and can’t find an answer to this error. Also can’t find the file on my operating system (Windows XP Pro). Anyone ever have this problem and if so do you know where I can find this file. The program seems to work fine after I "ok" the message box but it’s a pain.

I did a search on Google groups for this and found the following message from Hecate that may answer your question. It should be noted that the original question was in relation to Photoshop 6.
"Well, that .dll doesn’t appear in my PS folders. Nor does it appear in my WINNT folder. So I would suggest it’s a plugin that’s the problem." John McGerr

I haven’t installed any plug ins (or filters) yet so I’m not so sure if it has anything to do with them. It sure has me stumped though. Thank you much for the suggestion. I’ll keep trying to figure it out but I’ve just about ran out of ideas. I’ve un installed and reinstalled Photoshop many times but so far it hasn’t helped. My next move might be to un install it again and reinstall it but don’t let it install in the default folder and see if that helps. Any other ideas I’d be welling to try. Thanks again!

Well, just for you I did a full hard disk search again. I’;m running PS 7 and that file is not on my hard disk and Photoshop doesn’t complain. So it isn’t something that belongs to Photoshop. And that’s why uninstalling and reinstalling won’t work.

In Windows XP you can scan your system for lost or corrupted files and windows will repair them…..that is if you have your Windows CD

Do the following to see if maybe that file is corrupted or missing

Start>Run
Type ‘cmd’ without the quotes
Type ‘sfc /scannow’ without the quotes…SFC stands for System file Checker
just let this run and you may be prompted to insert your windows cd to repair or replace files
worth a try I think

I use a Macintosh, so I can’t check this, but I’m pretty sure that this library is part of SiverFast software. That’s why it begins with "SF_". Reinstall your scanner software if you do indeed have SilverFast installed.

Thanks for the suggestion. I tried that and didn’t make a difference. I didn’t even know that command existed, could come in handy for other problems in the future but this time it didn’t cure the problem.

That sounds logical, but according to

Just as a matter of interest, you have searched your computer for the file? The reason I ask is software quite often chokes when it can’t find something in the place it expects it, even though it may be on the hard disk somewhere. if it is there, and you can find it, you can right click/properties to find out what it’s associated with.

Yes I have done a search of my entire hard drive for "fs_osu.dll" and then a search for all the .dll files on the computer to see if I could find anything even close. This has been a tough one for me. Everything seems to work just fine in Photoshop but even if I go to import for my scanner I get the same message and when I click "ok" all works fine.

Definitely mysterious, but you’ve got it bugging me so much I even tried a google search last night 😉 Needless to say, nothing came up 🙂

Whatever you do make sure you let us know what the heck that file is ‘cos I’ve been racking my brain trying to figure this one out and it’s driving me crazy…..i’ll keep looking because this has become personal…LOL. Normally, I’m a pretty good troubleshooter but this has to be one heck of a brain-teaser. I’ve been all over the internet trying to find a solution for this and still haven’t come up with anything. Having searched my drive(s) and not having found anything, this is what I would do at this point.

1) START>RUN and type ‘regedit’ without the quotes
2) Backup your registry….REGISTRY>EXPORT REGISTRY FILE. Verify that the ‘Export Range is set to ‘ALL’
3) Search for that damned sf_osu.dll file and see if there is a reference anywhere in the registry that has anything to do with that. If so, delete the reference.

If that gets you nowhere you can download ‘HijackThis’ from the following link http://mjc1.com/mirror/hjt/.
I’t’s a zip file….no installation needed….just unzip and run it. Select ‘Scan’ and it will show you files which it deems as suspicious. It does not function like Spybot. Spybot searches for spyware. This software searches for files which may be suspicious. Do not allow it to "fix" everything. See if it finds the damned sf_osu.dll file and if it does, select it and ‘fix’ it. A dialog box should come up to confirm the deletion. If that doesn’t work, please let me know so that I can load the shotgun and shoot myself…..did I mention that this problem is driving nuts?

I have a feeling that you may have installed and uninstalled some software and when you uninstalled it, the uninstall wizard may have let a few references lying around….but then again, what the hell do I know?

hope this helps………

oh and by the way…..did I mention to let us know if and when you resolve this issue?

Hi DosBoss57, First off thank you and everyone else so much for trying to help me with this problem. I’ve been working some long hours the last two days so I haven’t had a lot of time to play with my Photoshop. Yesterday I did (once again) un installed Photoshop, cleaned out my registry of any thing that referred to photoshop or adobe and also un installed Adobe Reader which at this time is the only other Adobe product that I had installed on my computer. I also ran "reg clean", "reg seeker", easy cleaner" and regsruber XP" to see if they might find something left in the registry that I might have missed. (Oh ya, I did do a number of searches for sf_osu.dll , sf_osu., sf_, osu and a few other combinations of the file name with no luck). I installed Photoshop on my "D" drive instead of the default "C:\program files\adobe\PhotoshopCS"where I had it installed in the past installations. When I opened the new install of Photoshop it did the same ol thing and said that it was missing "SF_OSU.DLL". After I "ok" the message box Photoshop seems to run just fine. Also I have a Microtek ScanMaker III, a HP ScanJet II (both older scanners) and a Canon CanoScan fs 2710 film scanner. The first time I go to import them within Photoshop I also get the same message window "missing SF_OSU.DLL" but after I ok the window they work fine. If I import the scanners in any other program I don’t get that message window. "I’m Stumped"

Yes, that’s what I’m thinking as well. I’ve seen that happen often as a lot of uninstall apps miss files/refenernces.

Good News! Just for the heck of it I made a copy of the file "Photoshop.dll" and named it "SF_OSU.DLL" and added it to my Photoshop CS folder and now Photoshop opens without that annoying window saying that it couldn’t find "SF_OSU.DLL". Everything seems to work just fine in Photoshop. Still don’t know why it was asking for that file but at least it quit asking for it! Thank so much for all the help in trying to fix this problem. No, I tried that first and it gave me the message "missing ordinal 46" (whatever that is!) so then I tried a couple of other dll files before I used the "photoshop.dll" and made a copy of it and named it sf_osu.dll. I also wish I knew why photoshop was asking for that file in the first place. I’m getting close to formatting my hard drive (as soon as I get some time off of work], I’m betting that it won’t ask for that file once I reinstall it on a newly formatted drive. Thank you all again. Hey Jim
