Bug in photoshop text tool?

I have a photoshop document with 36 images and 20 text layers. The images are small and the file size is only 3 megabytes. When I had only a few text layers, I had no problem editing text, from photoshop 5.5 through the current CS.
But as I added layers, I found can no longer edit the text layers. I turn on the text tool, and click on the text to edit and I only get a new text layer. I’ve tested the
document in photoshop 5.5 and CS and both have the same
problem. Has anyone seen this problem?
Is there another way in CS to edit text?

Yes, I normally do that. In this case no help.
A sequence (photoshop CS):
open the file
click on a layer in the layer box
(I can right click on in the layer box and change properties, I can doule click in the name and change the name of the layer.) click on the text tool
click on the text I want to change.
All I get is a new text box.

Normally the above sequence puts me into editing the existing text. The text layer is not locked, and I can edit on other, less complicated files.

By any chance are you, or were in you in a quick-mask mode by accident?

I check that and no.

I experimented a little more, creating anothe file from scratch. It appears that if the cursor has any portion of the cursor on the text, it will properly select the text layer for editing. If you click between letters, it will start a new text layer. It appears that as the file gets more complex, photoshop gets confused and never seems to think it is on an
existing text layer. The behavior is the same on
photoshop 5.5 and CS.

Ah-ha!
I see why I can’t edit the text layers. It’s because
they are no longer text layers! How that happened,
I do not know. One thing, I have smaller files and dragged and dropped layers from multiple files to create this new large one. I have no idea how the text got converted
to bit maps. I tried dragging and dropping text layers
from one test image to another and they stayed as text.
Any ideas? All files are RGB 8-bit standard photoshop
files.
