I have the same problem and error message , except Pshop fails even before I try and open an image. The notes and tricks opening box doesen’t even make it up, although the tool bars and palattes are there. The fixit instructions on the adobe site :

Error "…error has been detected with a required application library…" when you start (InCopy CS2, Photoshop CS, Adobe Creative Suite 2.0 applications)

* Issue *

When you start an Adobe application for the first time, it returns the following error, "An Error has been detected with a required application library and the product cannot continue. Please reinstall the application."

* Detail *

The problem may occur in the following applications: Adobe Acrobat 7.0 Professional or Standard, Adobe GoLive CS2, Adobe InCopy CS2, Adobe InDesign CS2, Adobe Illustrator CS2, and Adobe Photoshop CS-CS2. * *

* Solution: Rename folders in the installation path. *

Remove any extended characters (for example, Ö) in the path of the installed application that returned the error, or reinstall the application: * *

1. In Windows Explorer, navigate to the application file. (By default, Adobe applications are installed to the Program Files\Adobe folder on the system hard disk.)

2. The path appears in the Address box in Explorer. Do one of the following:

— Rename the folder that contains extended characters.

— Remove the Adobe application by using the Add/Remove utility, and reinstall it to a location that doesn’t include any extended characters in the path (for example, the root of the hard disk). For instructions on using the Add/Remove utility, see the documentation included with Windows.

* Background information *

Adobe applications that require activation can’t be installed to a location on the hard disk that includes extended characters in the path name. * *

Do not work – indeed my efforts to install in the root directory failed – this is not permitted at all – so much for testing. I installed in another direxctory I created under C:/ and that also didn’t solve the problem.

HELP!!!

Hello everyone!
I’ve encountered a similar problem with Adobe CS2 products (the same error message), but there is the difference. Software is installed on Windows 2003 server which is Remote Desktop Server. If being logged as Administrator, I can run these programs normally, but "normal" user can run software only when logged on locally, but not in remote desktop.
While being logged as "normal" user via Remote Desktop, the "An error has been detected with a required application library and the product cannot continue. please reinstall the application" error occures and program quits. Previous versions (CS) didn’t have such a problem. Interestingly, that not all programs have this bug (or feature? 😉 ): Photoshop CS2 and Acrobat 7.0 do, but Image Ready and Acrobat Reader 7.0 don’t.
Have anyone seen similar things with remote desktop? Or someone already knows how to treat this? Thanks in advance.
