Hi,

I am thinking about doing a university study about facial expressions influence on evaluation of a person’s trustworthiness.

For this, a nifty little tool would be much appreciated: Something that could sum up different characteristics of a face (e.g. symmetry, but also size of eyes, facial form etc) into one comparable number.

Like this:

Face One: symmetry 0,7 length/with: 3

Face two: symmetry: 0,73, lengt/with 2,5

The pics would be black and white, and to reduce noise, the background would probably have to be removed.

Any Ideas?

You’ll have to search the web (or do a lexis nexis search) but there are detailed studies on how we react to various facial characteristics. There’s also a complete measurement system for faces to help computers use AI to identify individuals. A camera in a mall can be attached to a computer programmed to look for certain people when they shop. A camera in a bus depot can look for suspected terrorists.

This I know – however, I suspect that this kind of biometrics is 1) extremely expensive and 2) copyrighted, patented and business secrets.

My hope was to find a (cheap) piece software that could report simple features of a face (without recognizing it etc.)

Not necessarily. If the work was done with US Government money, the information is quite probably available … and free.
