My aging monitor is showing signs of terminal problems and I will be replacing it. I have a nice (in my opinion) CRT monitor picked out, but I’d love to reclaim come precious physical desk space and get a LCD monitor. Since I know little about them, other than that is what sales people are pushing on you these days, I thought I’d get some feedback from the group on them.

Are LCD monitors up to the task of photoediting and other serious graphics work? I’ve seen them touted primarily as space saving devices and superb for text, but little mention of their graphics capabilities or comparison with CRT monitors on that score.

In a word, no. Not if you want proper colour correction. One exception is if you buy colour corrected TFT screens aimed at graphic workers. You’ll them from companies like Eizo. You’ll usually pay a premium amounting to something like 75-100% of the price of a non-specialist TFT.

Thanks for the info. This reinforces my opinion, LCD monitors just aren’t there yet in terms of quality display.

Well, I’ve used laptops (IBM and HP/Compaq), and never had any trouble with them.

Just wondering, Bill, if you’ve ever viewed the same image on your laptop and a CRT monitor? Whenever I have, the laptop never compares. I was hoping that with the advances in LCD technology, I’d be able to regain some desk real estate by replacing my monitor with a LCD display, but from what I’ve seen they are still overly pricey for any given size. When I added color control to my requirements, the LCD prices jumped even higher.

I am looking at getting a 19" CRT monitor from LaCie that has a street price of around US$310. Compare this to the US$1,300 – US$1,500 price for comparable control in a 19" LCD display from LaCie or Eizo. I just can’t justify the expense right now. I did look at some high end consumer LCD displays, but even in the store, the displays were all unsharp. These still came in at 2x – 2.5x the price of the LaCie CRT. Even that is a premium over, for example, a high end ViewSonic CRT. The consumer CRTs fell short on the color control, so I’m scratching them. Three hundred buck, while still in the premium range, I can afford. . . and have enough left over in my budget for a Wacom Graphics Tablet.

I assume that you’re not someone who needs proper colour correction for printing/CMYK workflows then.
