Removing elements of a digital photo – advice needed

I have to remove elements of digital photos on a regular basis, before I add images over the blank area. I use the eraser tool at the moment, but it takes a v long time to do it. Is there a quicker more efficent way?

I use photoshop 6.1.

There are numerous ways. If you want good results, expect to spend some time. A little reading below will help you along. Right off bat, let me encourage you to learn LAYER MASKS and use them instead of the eraser.

I haven´t used the eraser in years. Follow Howards advice, and use Layer Masks instead.
