Being new to digital photography I am learning from magazine articles / books and they all use Photoshop for tutorials and examples.

Problem is I have a low spec W98 computer and would like to get an older version of PS for now.
Which version is best for a beginner ? I’ve seen 5, 5.5, 6, 7, Elements 1 and 2 and LE. Would I be able to follow simple tutorials with any of these ?

Elements 1 has been suggested but I can’t find it for sale.

Hi Chris. I started with PS5 and the 3inch book that came with it. Hope you don’t expect to learn it real fast. Takes alot of time, effort and trial-error but you can do some real amazing stuff with it. "Kris" wrote in message

I depend on many adobe products for my biz…but, my experience is that I was able to learn more from a retail product PhotoImpact
for the first couple of years…..I see various posts that the program is occasionally given away free in magazines….but, I would
highly recommend and older or newer version of this first….then, work you way into Photoshop.

Photoshop Elements 2 is inexpensive, designed for beginners, and has much better online help and how-to information than regular Photoshop.

Furthermore, it is often given away with the camera, and while it has fewer features than PS, it has just about everything you’ll need for digital photography. I’d recommend it as well. Don’t worry too much about which version, just get the latest you can find. Excellent starting place.
