Do a "find" (in windows) for "actions.pdf" for explanations of default Photoshop actions (in PS6, at any rate), and go to…
http://www.digitaliguana.com/HandoutsEvents.html
and download "Actions in Photoshop 6.0".

Actions are incredible tools, sorta of like a macro. You can, for instance, write an action to resize all of your photos. Suppose you had 100 8 x 10 photos and you wanted them all resized to 4×5. Rather than open 100 files and resizing each one, you can record an action to open all 100 files for you, resize and save each one–all this accomplished with one click–then you can sit back and watch or go eat lunch. They are really very simple to record. Try em–you’ll like em!

Andy:

The Photoshop Help topics are a very good resource for learning about actions. F1 (to show Help). Search on "automating tasks" or "actions."

Then do a Google search using

photoshop actions tutorial

as a search argument and you’ll be rewarded with several sites where action tutorials can be found that go beyond the PS help.
