I have a Wacom stylus and tablet.

All I really want to do with it is draw a fairly basic freehand comic strip. Is this possible in Photoshop? I only have an old version, I believe the latest will enable you to draw smooth freehand curves. I’ll buy it if that’s what I need. However some other kind of software (illustration or animation maybe) may be preferable.

I’m having some trouble working out what I need, but I’d like to do it soon so I can get it and start climbing up the learning curve.

Cheers

IMHO, Illustrator is preferable for drawing.

Well Flash has tweening, but it’s not the natural way cartoonists animate. The most common "old school" method for drawn animation is to draw on paper, and scan it in. Enhance your outlines, paint, and put em all together in Flash (if you’re publishing to the web).

In Flash you can "trace bitmap" and make your lines smooth vectors. Illustrator has similar tracing, but it’s a LOT harder to use and get what you want.

If you’re making videos tho, Flash is kind of the crappy poorman’s way. People "claim" SouthPark was done in Flash, but I doubt it. In any case, SouthPark is pretty crappy artistically speaking lol!

Flash isn’t as crappy as you think. Check out www.homestarrunner.com for the best cartoon flash animation I’ve ever seen, (and it’s one of the funniest sites around…)

You might want to check out Paint Shop Pro v8.
As far as comic strips are concerned it has all the features you’ll need, plus it handles vector graphics as well as bitmap all in the one package for a fraction of the price.
As an added bonus it also includes an Animation Workshop if you want to do animated ‘toons.
Its certainly worth a look.

You might find this of interest: "Photoshop for Comics Master Course" by Pat Duke (Radio Comix). I can’t vouch for the quality of instruction, since I haven’t looked at it yet.
