Converting a Jpg/Gif to a "cartoon" type image

Hello. Can anyone share any tips on how to convert a standard jpg/gif image to a "cartoony" type image?

Lets say I had an image of a house. (jpg) Is there a way I can turn this image to more of a comic/ cartoon type image? (For thos who use MSN, I guess you could say similar to those type of images)

Depends how cartoony a look you’re going for. There’s no "magical" way to take a photo and make it into a traditional, mickey mouse-type cartoon.

You can achieve a passable cell-shading look by using the cutout filter. My suggestion is to check out the other threads in this forum on the subject. There have been a half-dozen or so in the past couple days. There may be other tidbits of advice in those threads.

As Bludvlz suggested, Filter>Artistic>Cutout is a good start. I would suggest minimum Edge Simplicity, maximum Edge Fidelity, and play with the Number of Levels to get an effect you like.

Then, if you want ink outlines, try Filter>Artistic>Poster Edges and play with the options sliders to get an effect that you like.

As a different way to start out, convert your image mode to Indexed Color and select Dither as "None" and type in a relatively small number of colors like "5" (you could use 3, 4, 5, up to maybe 11 or so) and that will give you a much simplified picture. Then, if you like what you got, convert the image mode back to RGB so that you can again use all the tools and filters. You might want to apply a bit of Noise>Median to remove some small details and maybe Poster Edges for the ink lines again.
