yes i recall there being a limit. i’m not sure what it is… 255 seems to come to mind though, but i wouldn’t bet the farm on it.
I versions prior to 7.0 I think it was 99. But 7.0 removed that and for some reason the number 4,000 is stuck in my head.
I’m sure Chris will be along to straighten this out eventually.
Bob
My memory says 8000 since the release of version 7.0
Definitely 99 before that.
I’m using PS7. If the limit is 99, I may to rethink this project. If the limit is 4,000 I’ll never hit that number.
The 99-Layer limit died with version 6.x.
8,000 is the actual limit in 7.0, but the engineers suggest keeping the total to 800 or less due to, uh, certain speed issue above 800 layers or so. . .
I’ll keep that in mind the next time I get up to 750 or so. 🙂
Bob
8000 is the fixed limit.
The practical limit is how fast your machine is and how long you can wait for the layers to recomposite and redraw.
(On a G5, I did manage 2000 layers without too much pain)
Chris!
I didn’t know you were an artist as well as a software engineer. I wonder if this 2000 layer work of art exists somewhere so we can all go and take a look at it.
<grin>

As I recall from browsing his website once, Chris does some pretty cool paper marbling.
🙂 Thanks for the help, everyone. This project will vary, but I can’t imagine needing more than 1000 layers.
