Grey Scale Images appear Purple

When ever I open a grey scale image in Photoshop 6 the images appear purple in tone. Does anyone know how to remedy this? I know its not my monitor because the prior to the problem happening grey scale images appeared fine. Also my Photshop Palettes and other window objects are grey.

Please advise. Even tried reinstalling Photoshop 6 and it still happened.
