The catch is that you give them your money and you get nothing except a massive credit card bill in return. Complain, and Art Schwartz, the convicted felon who sent you the email, will threaten to publish your credit card number on the Internet, and/or report you to the authorities for attempting to steal software.

Art’s site, perfect-shareware.com (and all the various domains which redirect to it) used to be hosted by Cove Software Systems, a Web hosting company known in the past for hosting kiddie porn sites [1]. Art himself is a long-term spammer [2] and convicted felon [3] who’s been running this scam for a number of years [4].

Cove Software was a good match for Art; Cove doesn’t mind hosting illegal sites, and Art runs a criminal enterprise. Cove, as most such hosting companies go, has run into financial trouble, and recently sold their Web hosting to a different company, Superb Internet. I spoke with a gentleman at Superb internet today, who said that unlike Cove, Superb internet does not like spammers or criminals and will not host for them.

I would suggest that you send a copy of the email you received to Superb at

abuse (at) superb.net

Let them know that the email is advertising a pirate site they acquired when they bought Cove’s assets. You can also give them a call; their toll-free number is 888-354-6128.

Art’s security certificate was revoked some time ago; he has a new one now, and is using Authorize.net to process credit card transactions.

Hmm. So, I check my email this morning to find a bunch of emails from good ol’ Art himself, starting "I know where you live" and promising to ruin my life if I keep posting information about his scam. About the same time, "Barry Winfield" posts a message supporting Perfect Shareware, using Art’s peculiar and inimitably weird grammer.

Hey, Art, do you really think that creating bogus email accounts and posting fake testamonials for your fraudulent "service" will help you any? 🙂

One of the more amusing parts of Art’s pile of emails:

"I have a good housewarming party planed for you! Back off! Don’t think for a minute I will let you get away with what you are doing if you continue libeling me and your other actions. Do you want to see what I can do to your livelihood, reputation etc. once I contact them?!"

So, folks, if you send convicted felon Art Schwartz your credit card number, keep in mind what sort of person you’re giving your financial information to…

Dozens of Internet crime suspects nabbed

By CURT ANDERSON
Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON (AP) — A summer-long effort targeting Internet crime has resulted in dozens of arrests and convictions on charges including use of "spam" e-mail to steal credit card numbers, computer hacking and online fraud, Justice Department officials said Thursday.

The suspects were identified during more than 160 federal investigations into a variety of Internet crimes that victimized about 150,000 people and caused $215 million in estimated losses, Attorney General John Ashcroft said. The initiative began June 1 and ended Thursday.

Although the arrests make only a tiny dent in overall online crime, Ashcroft said it was important that law enforcement officials demonstrate they take the problem seriously. Identity theft alone, he said, costs the U.S. economy an estimated $50 billion a year.

"This is a series of cases that is designed to signal that we do not believe the Internet to be off-base for law enforcement," Ashcroft told reporters.

John A. Greco Jr., president and chief executive officer of the Direct Marketing Association, said the cases targeting purveyors of e-mail spam would help build trust among consumers about using the Internet to buy legitimate goods and services.

"For too long, spammers have operated with impunity," he said. "For too long, they have taken comfort in the shadows of cyberspace."

Announcement of the initiative came one day after the Justice Department disclosed the FBI had searched homes and an Internet service provider in the nation’s first federal copyright infringement action taken against a peer-to-peer, or P2P, network, in which users can access files directly from one another’s computer hard drives.

The effort described Thursday, dubbed "Operation Web Snare," produced 103 arrests and 53 convictions during the three-month time frame, although some of them overlap and some convictions were included in the total for people arrested before the initiative began. The Federal Trade Commission, FBI, Postal Inspection Service and foreign agencies were all involved.

Among the cases:

-The June arrests of two men on charges of conspiring to steal a copy of the entire list of 92 million America Online members, with the goal of selling it to e-mail "spammers" who would then be able to send members unwanted messages.

-Roman Vega, a Ukrainian arrested in Cyprus, was extradited to California in June to face charges of buying and selling credit card numbers obtained illegally from sources around the world, including online merchants and financial processing companies.

-Jay R. Echouafni, chief executive officer of Orbit Communications Corp. in Massachusetts, was indicted this week along with five others on charges that he hired computer hackers to attack his firm’s online competitors. Prosecutors say the attack cost the competitors $2 million and temporarily disrupted Web sites for the Homeland Security Department and Amazon.com.

-In Utah, R. Mark Pentrack is serving an 11-year prison sentence after pleading guilty to several charges stemming from a scheme in which he purported to sell car parts, aircraft parts and other items over the Internet but never delivered them. Pentrack’s victims sent him more than $200,000.

Art’s time will come. They are cracking down on his type of operation. See this
story from AP that ran yesterday:
[…]

Many people understand that local authorities can’t directly intervene in internet-related scams, theft and soforth if the perpetrator is out of their district, BUT many con-artists on the Net are also criminals in their community. Case-in-point: An ebay thief was screwing over buyers on rather petty items, but one victim wrote to the seller’s local police. The cops could do nothing, but they did file the complaint. The next year a young girl in his town disappeared. The cops, working with the FBI did the usual scan of suspects and this petty-thief’s name came up. A quick check showed that he lived near the missing girl. A visit to his home found him missing. The parents said "She knew that man!" and two weeks later the man was arrested in another state and today he is in jail for the rest of his life.

So feel free to report it to local authorities anyway.

Chances are that Art already has a local profile to add to.

Get a life. If any of it was true the company would have been shut down years ago. This company has been around for a long time. Now I see why very few people still use Newsgroups (to many nasty kooks). Just use some common sense. If any company used their card for anything other than they were suppose to they would be charged back and not make any money. This company is located in the US, so they would have been caught by now if they were doing what the kooks have said. The credit card companies fully protect you anyway and you are not responsible for unauthorized credit card charges. See links from Visa and MasterCard below. But if these kooks are really 14 years old none of this is going to make much since they never had a real credit card anyway.

Sadly, Art lives in the same state I do, so it’s a local matter rather than an FBI matter.

Still, hope must spring eternal in Artie’s world…here’s an excerpt from another gem that’s landed in my email:

"I know who you are. You are not going to get away with what you have been doing so easy this time if this continues. I would advice you to stop all illegal activities and harassment. Otherwise you will be in for a very big surprise very soon if you continue."

Franklin or known here as Tactic are you the pivot man in your polyamory three way gay relationships? Being an admitted hacker, involved in a gay marriage and stalker who takes photos of children is highly illegal in Florida. I am sure you will enjoy your stay in State Prison. I have a few friends who are prison guards in the State Prison near you, so I will make sure you get the special attention you need.

About Franklin http://www.xeromag.com/fvabout.html
What to say about me? Hmm. Okay: Let’s start with the fact that I’m pierced, tattooed, jaded, kinky, and polyamorous; I take pictures and dabble in electronics; and I’ve been known to blow up donuts.
I’ve been a computer hacker since the early 1970’s, when I got my first TRS-80 Model I (and a 300 baud modem!).
THINGS I LIKE include thrash and industrial music, body piercing (standard answers: Both nipples and navel; because I like the aesthetics, why else would anyone decorate their body?; and yes, of COURSE it hurts, but not as much as you think); tattoos (standard answers: Yes, on the small of my back; the Japanese Kanji character meaning "chaos;" and yes, of COURSE it hurts, probably more than you think); Apple computers (one purple iMac, one graphite iMac, one Power Macintosh, two Powerbooks, one Apple Lisa, and one decked-out //C); role-playing games; antique computing machinery; cyberpunk, and chaos.
Religion and Philosophy
I’m an ordained reverend in the Church of the Subgenius, which means that I know that the only thing better than Divine Forgiveness is an Excuse. I am also a practicing Discordian, which means I like tossing the occasional golden apple into a banquet hall. If you don’t know what any of that means, that’s okay…just beware the Stark Fist of Removal.
Work and Play
I own a small graphic design, training, and consulting firm called Obsidian; and spend nights photographing people and things; writing shareware programs for the Macintosh; playing chess, pool, and Age of Empires; and occasionally taking the odd random dive out of a perfectly good airplane while it’s flying. I spend part of my weekends running a role-playing game, loosely based on Steve Jackson’s Generic Universal Roleplaying System. Home Life
I am a BDSM switch (a who what? Visit my BDSM page if that doesn’t make sense to you); I’m mostly dominant, but not always.
Want to know more? Read my online Web journal

LOL – we’re an irregular lot, to be sure, but I think the picture is a bit more brighter than the one you paint, particularly if your trousers are lined with asbestos. I and others have been posting more or less helpful stuff here for years, and we will be here forever.

But it’s true this group is not for everyone, and the atmosphere is more cordial and people are more helpful on the moderated groups. One such group is the curvemeister group, an open forum for discussing color correction issues.

Although most of discussion there is curvemeister related, there is enough general info on curves and color correction to be of general interest, and no one gets flamed 🙂

One such
group
is the curvemeister group, an open forum for discussing color correction issues.
Yes, this is a useful group, and yes, mostly newbies come here, but that’s cool. I always find a lot of good tips here, actual user tips that the manual often doesn’t cover. I then save them in a file for future reference. Guys that get picked on here are usually newbies that some of the testosterone based flamers (only 3 or 4) get off on. Not bad for the demographics. Ya just have to work through them.
Even they get bored and start helping, once in a while!

Franklin or known here as Tactic are you the pivot man in your polyamory three way gay relationships? Being an admitted hacker, involved in a gay marriage and stalker who takes photos of children is highly illegal in Florida.

Art, Art, Art. You silly, silly man, you can’t even get the details right.

My handle is "Tacit," not "Tactic." I’m in a straight three-way relationship, not a gay three-way relationship–both of my partners are female. And I have no pictures of children; the youngest model in my gallrty is 22, the oldest 38.

Art’s continued to send me emails daily; the most recent round begins "Stop your Libel & Harassment of me and my company now before it is to late" (I assume he means "too late") and then, bizarrely, takes an abrupt segue into weird accusations of child pornography: "Your Child pornography will get you many years in jail." From there, it takes a turn for the weirder: "But that is only the tip of the iceberg as they say. If I see any more attempts of you libeling my business or trying to hurt me or my business in any way I will make it my life’s work to see you put in jail for all your illegal activities. Maybe you have a rich family who has been supporting your life style because I can’t imagine anyone wanting to do business with you. But once they learn of what you have really been doing, I am sure you will be cut off."

And believe it or not, that’s the most coherent part of the email.

IOn any event, since this issue is now wildly off-topic for this newsgroup, I’m planning to post all Art’s email (with full headers) on the Web, so it’ll not be necessary to clutter the Photoshop newsgroup with this ongoing drama. The URL will be

http://www.xeromag.com/artschwartz.html

for anyone who’s interested in seeing this play out. (It’s not up yet, but should be this afternoon.) That’ll spare those newsgroup readers who’re uninterested in Art and his doings from having to skip over these threads.

On a related note, I’m definitely interested in hearing from anyone who’s received any of Art’s spam promoting his "business," or even copies of his spam (with full Internet headers). If you’ve received any spam advertising low-cost or free software, and can email it to me, please contact me off-list.

I got all the software they advertised. 14 year old kook troll kids like jjs and his kook friends on this Newsgroup fail to understand that if a company does not deliver on what is promised you just dispute the credit card charges and don’t have to pay for the service. If there is any unauthorized credit card charges you are not responsible for the credit card charges. So there is no way to get ripped off because you will not have to pay. Would not be any point in paying for an expensive fast Internet Web Server like this company has if they always had charge backs. I am sure these kooks can make up all sorts of other lies in response to this. But a company that has been in business for as many years as this one must be doing something right or they would have been closed down long ago. Just use a little common sense

14 year old kook troll
kids like jjs and his kook friends on this Newsgroup fail to understand that if a company does not deliver on what is promised you just dispute the credit card charges and don’t have to pay for the service.

Not all credit cards cover all the charges…and besides, anyone who disputes the charges gets an email from you threatening to report them to the FBI for software piracy and threatening to post their credit card number publicly, remember?

Let’s see what a real testimonial, not one faked by Art Schwartz, looks like, shall we? There’s an angry "customer" of your phony "business" who has a lot to say about you here:

(Note: watch the line wrap!)

There is no justification of software piracy fullstop.

It bleeds resource from software houses, government and local communities. It smells and smells purty darn powerful too

If individuals require locost software there are fantastic open source programs available

These include The Gimp (wonderful and great hands on for thosenew to digital imagery, math and arts – a wonderful blend of technologies and artistic expression as well as computer sciences) and Open Office.

Academic users may avail themselves of these products for little to no cost

Commercial users may avail themselves for very moderate costs

So, to state it again: there ain’t no justification for hacked, cracked or pirated software. It is illegal fullstop

What to say about me? Hmm. Okay: Let’s start with the fact that I’m pierced,
tattooed, jaded, kinky, and polyamorous; I take pictures and dabble in electronics; and I’ve been known to blow up donuts.
I’ve been a computer hacker since the early 1970’s, when I got my first TRS-80 Model I (and a 300 baud modem!).
THINGS I LIKE include thrash and industrial music, body piercing (standard answers: Both nipples and navel; because I like the aesthetics, why else would anyone decorate their body?; and yes, of COURSE it hurts, but not as much as you think); tattoos (standard answers: Yes, on the small of my back;
the Japanese Kanji character meaning "chaos;" and yes, of COURSE it hurts, probably more than you think); Apple computers (one purple iMac, one graphite iMac, one Power Macintosh, two Powerbooks, one Apple Lisa, and one
decked-out //C); role-playing games; antique computing machinery; cyberpunk,
and chaos.
Religion and Philosophy
I’m an ordained reverend in the Church of the Subgenius, which means that I
know that the only thing better than Divine Forgiveness is an Excuse. I am also a practicing Discordian, which means I like tossing the occasional golden apple into a banquet hall. If you don’t know what any of that means,
that’s okay…just beware the Stark Fist of Removal.
Work and Play
I own a small graphic design, training, and consulting firm called Obsidian;
and spend nights photographing people and things; writing shareware programs
for the Macintosh; playing chess, pool, and Age of Empires; and occasionally
taking the odd random dive out of a perfectly good airplane while it’s flying.

Stop being stupid, ChildMike. No one is fooled by your ludicrous granstanding.

you suck at even the simplest things.

Hooked you right in the eye, again… didn’t I.

IOW, no, you still have no idea what "trolling," one of the most universal and simplest concepts on usenet, means DroolingIdiotMike.

You don’t make the rules, goofball. I play the game like I wish, you get to respond how you wish.

IOW, you’re now trying hypocrisy along with grandstanding in a desperate attempt to dig yourself out.

Tsk. You suck, Mike. Poorly.

Now take the hook out of your eye again.

Now, ChildMike – I don’t come to *your* work and slap the dick out of your mouth.

Here’s a hint, child: you first have to fool someone

That is how you play the game, I have no need to trick anyone. I troll as I wish and you can suck it up.

Hehehehaha.

Damn, you suck Mike.

I have no need to "dig out" of anything. I like where I am.

Now take the hook out of your eye again.

Your sexual fantasies are not my problem.

Damn, you suck Mike.

Once again, your sexual fantasies are not my problem.

(This is the spot where he shows me how bad I am, by him writing more rude things in the newsgroup.)

hahahahaha.

Mercy rule time, ChildMike. You’ve grown far too pathetic to keep beating.

Your fantasies about "beating" someone in a newsgroup is so very silly. Your silly fantasies tell much more about you than anything about me.
