with CS you could try Shadow/Highlight under image adjustments! failing that use a feathered selection & highlight or darken as the case may be.

Another two ways

1. Select the dark area, feather – dodge tool with a soft edge large brush – set exposure at 10% or less and brush over the selection until it is as you want it!!
2. Same selection – copy and paste onto new layer, in the new layer properties set the blend mode as screen and adjust the opacity. Harry

Select the shadowed part, and use the color correction tools, such as Image->Adjust->Curves.
