I’m new to Photoshop and having problems saving files in other formats. I’m using Photoshop CS.

When I attempt to Save a file using the Save As command I only have 4 formats: Photoshop, Photoshop PDF, Photoshop RAW and Tiff. According to everything I’ve read, Photoshop can save in many formats. What am I doing wrong?

thanks in advance
Glenn

Your image is in 16 bits per color. Only the formats you mention suport this. All other formats will be available after you chance the image to 8 bits per color.

Or, the image has elements, such as Layers, Alpha Channels or Paths, that restrict the format selection. To see the full range of formats, convert to 8 bit, Flatten the image Layers, remove any Alpha Channels, and Paths (AFTER saving the image as PSD!!!!). All possible formats will then appear on the Save_As list.

No. If your image has layers, paths and/or alpha channels, you still get the normal list of all possible formats on ‘Save as…’. If you try to save in a format that doesn’t support those extras, you see a warning that you must save a copy, but the choice is still there. If you only see those four mentioned formats and no others, it’s because the image is 16 bits, period.

Right you are. In earlier versions of PS (4 and maybe even 5, which I don’t have installed), the list only showed PSD. At least by 6, all formats are shown and one just gets error/warning messages.

Thanks for the correction.
