I changed a .jpg photo’s extension by mistake to .txt (don’t ask!) but when I renamed it back PS said it couldn’t open it because "opening mathematically coded .jpg’s was not implemented".

HELP…. now what can I do??

Did you try to open it with Windows Paint after renaming *.txt to *.jpg ? If this is possible, save it as (in Paint) and PS will open it correctly.

I hade something like this sometime ago, and it worked.
Good luck !

One program that seems to open any image file is Irfanview, which is available free from www.irfanview.com I have had several instances when A file would not open in PS and have opened it in Irfanview and then saved it again and it has then been OK in PS

PS 7 can’t even open files it created. grab a ps3 photo and watch it choke. But IV does handle them just fine and saves them readable for ps7. If you don’t have IV as your main image viewer you’re most likely wasting a lot of productivity time with images.
Even if IV does fail to open it IV 3.3 could still show you a hex view to give you an idea as to why it couldn’t open it. ie: 1st few bytes = <!doctype = html mislabeled.
