Greetings,

I am a recent user to PS8. I am trying to do something that I think is rather simple yet for the life of me I cannot quite figure out how to do it. Maybe you can help?

I have a small graphic image with some text. The current size is approximately .75in wide by 1.5in long. I am using this for labels but I need to make the overall image size to be approximately 1.5×2.0. In addition I want to place a number of the newly sized images on a template and have them printed out in sheets.

So far I have been unable to resize the image nor can I place the image on a template and have it sized appropriately. The graphic part of the image is a small section of a larger JPG that I cut and paste into a new file. I then add the text underneath the image. I can’t seem to enlarge the section of graphics taken from the other JPG. If I could do that then I think I could get the overall size like I want it.

Any pointers or assistance would be much appreciated.

Cheers

As far as I know, photoshop has no template feature to easily print a sheet of labels like this. To do it well would require some understanding of resolution and a bit of math. An easier option might be to use a word processer like MS Word, which has built in templates for most any type of labels.

What is the pixel size of the image? You can get this by going to Image>Image Size. The first two fields show the dimensions of the image. You will want it to be at least 225×300 pixels, or it probably won’t print very well. (unless its a "soft" image)

Assuming it is big enough, you can import it into your Word template and place it appropriately.

You might want to look into the Contact Sheet option (File > Automate > Contact Sheet II). It will take a folder of files and rearrange them into columns and rows that you can specify. It also has a text option (I think file name), but there’s a check box in there somewhere that allows you to leave them all as separate layers, so you can make adjustments as needed.

Open your original file. Then open a new empty image (any size) and then set the canvas size to 1.5 by 2 inches Image>Canvas Size. Load your jpeg image and text into the same empty file as separate layers by dragging the layers across from the original.
Flatten the new image and save it. Close both windows.
This gives you a graphic that’s the right size.

Printing on a template can be a bit tricky because you’re going to have to create the template to suit your label sheet.
Try the following.
Take a sheet of labels and run a black pen or pencil around the outside of each label and scan it into Photoshop. Then try printing this onto a blank sheet of labels to see if the printout of the scanned version lines up with the labels outline on the printer. If not move the scanned image around in Photoshop until it does. Then put a copy of your graphic in each outline box on the scanned page. Delete the scanned label layer to remove the outlines and print.

Thanks everyone. I was able to muddle through it and I see from your responses that I was headed in the right direction! 🙂

I was also able to get the labels laid out the way I wanted. It’s a bit of a manual process but it works. It sure would be nice to be able to specify a graphics file and say make as many copies as possible on a single sheet. As it is I have to copy over the correct number of images and manually rotate them by 90 degrees before I can let the template tool do an auto layout.

Thanks again for the quick replies…
