I want to use photoshop to create the template for my website, but im not sure on what the best dimensions are. 766/441 is what i have been using so far. But all the websites i’ve been to before seem to use different dimensions.

Any advice would be appreaciated.

Unfortunately there’s no single answer to your question. If you want the widest possible size to fit 8×6 resolution then I believe it’s 760, at least that’s as wide as I make mine, but it won’t matter if you make it scalable. As for height… don’t concern yourself with that unless each page on your site only has limited information and then you can make a nice little area a consitent size from page to page.

Bottom line is that it’s completely up to you, the designer, to go with what looks and functions best for what you’re doing.

Here my answer to someone asking about sizes concerning a (non-scrolling) Flash site. If you are considering a scrolling website (html or flash) just ignore the hight notes:

If you believe the sizes suggested by Dreamweaver, creating a site for people with a screen resolution set to 640 x 480, the page design should be 600 x 300.

At 800 x 600 this should be 760 x 420
at 1024 x 768 this should be 955 x 600

Take in account that this is calculated based on maximized browser windows and you’ll be fine.

If you are going to create a full window Flash site then preferably build the presentation at 600 x 300. Initially building a Flash application at a smaller size and letting it scale up will save a few kb’s in the filesize. This is simply a pro tip from some magazine 😉

If you are going to create a true full-screen site, build the presentation using the usual screen aspect ratio, which is 800:600 or 8:6 or 4:3.

Another tip: building a full-window site is not recommended, because you rely on the user for the size they are viewing the webpage at.

You may rely on it that hardly anyone is using a screen resolution lower than 800 x 600, and if they do, they are probably not part of your target audience. So building the presentation at 760 x 420 and holding it in a TABLE of the same size would be the safest choice.

Don’t.

Get proper web site design software.

Stick with what suits you. Once you’ve finished your site consider making a second version at a different size then detect browser settings and redirect accordingly.
