Layer mask

When I first apply a layer mask it works OK. But if I save the file, when I re-open it the layer mask does not work. Using a paint brush it just paints the foreground colour instead of revealing the layer beneath. As a new user I would be grateful if someone can tell me what I am doing wrong.

be sure to click on the mask thumbnail each time you wan to paint on the mask.
