My computer has just died. I’m looking at a PC and wondering what monitor or factors about the monitor, same for video board, I should be looking for. It seems that one learns this stuff, buys and promptly forgets the specs. I do image restoration in PS. Help on brands etc would really be appreciated. I must get up and going quickly.

Iiyama. Good price. Mitsubishi tube But better than Mitsubishi monitors). CRT. Excellent colour. Go for the 19 or 22 inch.

I picked up that recommendation earlier. So I went my local retailer. He did find the Iiyama, not a normal request for him. I live in a small town. He thought that the HP CRT monitor p1230 was as good and less money??? In the video card he said the matrox G450 is the best. In my looking around at the matrox site all the video cards appear to be for dual monitors, something in which I have no interest. Is there another matrox? I am thinking that to buy the G450 I might be wasting money to some degree.

The Matrox G450 card has been around a looong time, but it’s still a great video card for graphics use. Dual-head, stable and inexpensive–get it in the 32M version, usually around $60 or so. Also they are well suited for use with LCD monitors because of their stability.

G450 is old and cheap. If you can stretch to it get the G550 which is a little newer and still cheap. I’m using one at the moment. It has excellent 2D which is all you require for PS.

Don’t dismiss the facility for dual monitors. If you use PS for any length of time you’ll end up wanting one, believe me (And you can always buy a new monitor and use the old one as the second monitor.).

I wouldn’t rate the HP as good a monitor. generally, monitors from PC manufacturers are cheap versions of brand name monitors and don’t perform as well. Iiyama is a monitor manufacturer and does the job well. If it’s a problem getting the iiyama, try Mitsubishi. They’d be my second choice. But buy as large as you can afford and aim for nothing less than a 19", particularly if you’re only having one monitor.
