I have an end user who’s Windows Explorer was crashing when she opened a shared folder that contained JPG’s with extremely long names (about 40 characters or more, including commas and hyphens). There was no corruption on any files in the share as others who do not have Photoshop installed have no issues. When the files were renamed to about 20 characters Explorer stopped crashing.

Does anyone know the limitations on filenames? How many characters are too many?

255 Characters for FAT32 & NTFS.

Does the problem occur with local files as well?

If not it is possible that the UNC string is too long. Have you tried mapping the shared folder as a drive?

Yes Photo, it happens to local files as well. Only when opening image files. And since I didn’t mention it earlier: Windows XP Pro SP1, build 2600 and Photshop 6.0.

Does(n’t) that 255 character limit apply to the entire path? Also, it may not be a good idea to use commas in file names.
