I am new to Photoshop annd need some advice with cropping. If I take a high resolution image and then use the cropping tool it gives me a rectangular box which dictates the crop area.
My question is how does this relate to when I put the cropped photo into photo developing shop. Does the image automatically stay in the correct proportions eg 6" x 4" when they subsequently print out?

Not unless the image is that size or an accurate proportion. Excess space around your image will print as white.

Thomas,

Only if you lock the aspect ratio of the crop tool.

You can specify print size and resolution in the crop options. If you don’t want the image resampled only specify the height and width in inches.

Depending on where you have it printed they should ask what size you want the images. If you provide them with images that have a 4×6 aspect ratio and ask them to print them 4"x6" there won’t be a problem.
