Cropping only Proportional?

Whenever I try to crop a photo photoshop 7.0 does not allow me to be detailed in my cropping. I only can adjust by the four boxes in the corners, there are not any in the middles so that I can adjust the top and bottom of the picture. Any suggestions? More details needed?

I think deleting the PS preferences fixes that problem.

Ensure that you have all the boxes clear on the options bar at the top of the screen. Sounds like an aspect ratio is set there.
