I wish to produce a large poster size picture. I have been working on a canvas that is the size I want but Photoshop struggles with the file size. Should I work on a small canvas and enlarge and if so what settings should I use?

It is best to start with the dimensions that you wish to end up with. Consider that posters, depending on content and expectations, can look good at 150ppi or less. Because they are viewed at a greater distance than a photograph the resolution doesn’t need to be 300ppi. Large PS files require massive amounts of computer power.

If you are at the creative stage trying ideas out, you could work at small file sizes just to test filters and effects. But you would need to start over for the final product at the correct size.

The trouble I’m having is that for some reason when I start to work on the poster my Monitor switches off and I am forced to reboot
