Hello All:

I am new to Photoshop — using CS (been using PSP for years).

Trying to colorize a bw photo but have hit a snag: When I try to add any color either by using the bucket or brushes I can only add shades of gray even though I have selected my colors in the palette.

I tried this on new layers as well as the image to see if I was doing something wrong. Apparently I am missing something. Could someone please tell what the hell am I doing wrong?

You help is very much appreciated.

Go to Image / Mode and see if you are in Grayscale. If so check off RGB Color.

Suggest that when colourizing you create a new layer above the target layer, set blending mode to overlay and then paint the desired colour onto that layer using a softedged brush … you might even try setting the brush to a lower opacity and building up lasyers of colour.
