I have a suspicion – and it is only a suspicion – that the problem may be caused by a graphics card driver.

Over the last week, I have been struggling with strange MS Outlook (XP) behaviour – a greyed, blank, toolbar-less Word instance opens when you open Outlook, Outlook itself is at first missing toolbars, and when you restore them, the "Reply" "Forward" etc buttons don’t work. Three hdd reformats and OS reinstallations later, I discovered that using either the Windows XP native driver or the Matrox Certified Windows driver for my P650 card solved all the problems. I got the Outlook/Word problem with all the all the "performance" published P650 drivers.

Because the (minor) Photoshop and Painter problems were also toolbar related I wonder if they were part of the same driver incompatibility?

David,

Try turning down hardware acceleration to zero as a
diagnostic. If that helps then it is definitely a video driver problem
